Mrs. Amanda Brokenborough died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Heritage Hall Nursing Facility, Nassawadox, VA.
She was born on June 21, 1919, of the union of the late Norah Williams and the late Henry Tazewell, Amanda was the eighth child of nine. She was the sole survivor until 10:35 pm on May 17, 2016, at the age of 96, when God welcomed her gentle spirit unto His own.
Amanda, also known and called Mandy, was primarily reared and attended public school in Northampton County, Virginia. At the age of 18 she married and mothered two sons. Years and the death of Leroy Ballard, she married the late Joseph Edward Brokenborough and to this union one daughter was born.
Amanda has been a dedicated member of the African Baptist Church for over 50 years. She has served in the Missionary Ministry, the Widows Club, participated in annual State and Fruit fundraising benefits and has held the title of the Mother of Year on several occasions throughout her membership. She was a God fearing lady who shared her faith with all.
She was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease for over 30 years. It gradually consumed her mobility wherein independent living was not safe. She did not like having to become dependent on others. She was a lady of great pride, but very humble, and never complained about any health conditions. She loved the Lord and was obedient to His will. During her short residential stay in Lewes, DE, she became a member of The Sussex County Parkinson Education and Support Group.
For many years, she was employed by the Webster Canning Factory in Cheriton, Virginia, and also worked as a house domestic engineer and travelled with her employer and his family to Florida during part of the winter season.
In addition to her gentle spirit and sense of humor, Amanda was a diva of hats and fashion and making cakes! Each outfit was not complete unless it had 'the' complimentary hat, bag and shoes! Every cake she made had to have her stamp of approval and if not she wasted no time in throwing the cake away!
Amanda is preceded in death by her siblings Jacob, Frank, Harry, Alfred, Handy, Annie Mae and Margaret Tazewell; her two sons, Thomas Nathaniel and Clarence Alfred Ballard and both husbands.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Troy) and will surely be missed by all to include her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, a host of cousins, and close family and friends
