Obituary

Curtis "Curt" Winfield Bell was born October 4, 1922 in the Eastville area to the late Peter and Margaret Wilson Bell. He was blessed with two older brothers, Robert "Pete" Bell and Roy Bell, both predeceased him.

On Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, Curt could not "hold on" any longer and peacefully went to his heavenly home after a prolonged illness.

Curt was educated in the public schools of Northampton and graduated from Northampton County High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II, 1944-1946. He was a special vehicle operator. Curtis earned the following honors: Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. He received an Honorable Discharge on May 12, 1946. He returned home to the Shore and held the following jobs: insurance agent, school bus driver, Sam's Plumbing Service (Norfolk, VA) and a long distance truck driver. He retired from "trucking" after 31 years. Driving was his passion. He often showed his children and grandchildren where he'd traveled on maps. He was also a source for information and guidance for other "truckers".

Curtis was raised in a Christian home and joined the body of believers at Bethel AME Church Eastville at the age of 12. He was an active member of the Trustee Board until his health began to fail.

Curtis belonged to the Northampton Men's Club, Northampton and Accomack Trucker's Club, S. W. Davis Elks Lodge #1516, Willie T. Brickhouse American Legion Post 400 and was active at the Senior Citizens Center.

Curtis was united in marriage to his life companion, Dorothy Roselle, on July 28, 1949. Four children were born of this union, Phyllis Townsend, Wayne Bell (Charlotte), Louis "Duke" Bell and Wynola "Nola" Wyatt (Elton).

Curt was kind, caring, loyal and comforting; he gave words of wisdom and encouragement to family and friends. He never had a harsh or unkind remark and formed friendships wherever he went. He valued his family and friends. He enjoyed playing games and telling war and trucker stories to all who would listen.

He leaves many to fondly remember his gentle acts and words of kindness including Dorothy, his devoted and faithful wife of 62 years, his four children, nine grandchildren: Wayne Bell, Jr. (Jannie), Corey Bell, Antonio Bell, Arienne "Mimi" Townsend, Erica "Candy" Bell, Teniya Bell, Elton Wyatt, Jr., Erik Wyatt and Derrick Bell; twelve great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, Jorron Jones (Joanne), Charlena Jones, Lykesha Mapp; six step great grandchildren, two nephews, three nieces, five nephews-in-law, four nieces-in-law, one sister-in-law, Bertha Bell, devoted first cousin, Charles Purnell, a loving and special niece, Margaret, cousins and many friends.
