Mrs. Emma Marie Savage Griffin was born in Northampton County on May 14, 1917, to the late George and Bessie Whitted Savage, the oldest of five siblings. Marie went home to be with the Lord at Riverside Memorial Hospital on November 29, 2012. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was a long-time member of Union Baptist Church. Marie enjoyed the church family and served as a missionary, deaconess, and member of Choir #2. She attended faithfully until her health began to fail. Marie received her high school education at Tidewater Institute on the Eastern Shore and attended St. Paul's Polytechnic Institute in Lawrenceville, VA, and also State Teachers College in Elizabeth City, NC, receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She received her master's degree in education and supervision from Northwestern University in Evanton, IL. Marie felt her lifework was in education and she enjoyed her students as much as they respected and loved her. She retired after 38 years as an educator in both North Carolina and Virgina. Marie was pre-deceased by husbands Reverend John Doles and Frederick Oliver Griffin, and sister Vivian Nealy of Queens, NY. She is survived by sisters Iris Kay (Martin) of Menlo Park, CA, and Madge Christian of Exmore, VA; and brother Onray Savage (Elizabeth) of Eastville, VA. Her memory will also be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
