George A. Smith was born September 12, 1931 to the late George A. and Patient Spady Smith. He was born, reared, and educated in Northampton County, Virginia. He departed this life at his home in the Captain's Cove Community of Greenbackville, VA.
"Jimmy", as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, always believed that Jesus was the center of his life. At an early age he joined First Baptist Church Capeville where he sang with the Starlight Chorus and the Gospel Echoes, a family group. He sang God's praises throughout the Eastern Shore.
As a family man, he wanted the best for his family. He moved to Norwalk, Connecticut in the early 60's so he could better provide for his family. While in Connecticut for over thirty years, he worked as a handyman for several private families, Plastic Products, and retired as a custodian for Norwalk Public School System in Norwalk, Connecticut. He knew the meaning of good work ethics at a very young age. He always worked to his fullest potential on any job.
Jimmy joined Calvary Baptist Church in South Norwalk, Connecticut and sang with the Sanctuary Choir, Men's Chorus, and the Norwalk Emergency Choir. He had a spiritual gift of lifting up God's word in song. He was a great singer and loved Christian music.
After retiring, he moved to Greenbackville, Virginia and became a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Horntown, Virginia where he served as a member of the Trustee Board, Usher Board, Senior Choir, Male Chorus and Pastor's Aide Chorus. He attended church faithfully until his illness would not allow.
His compassion for family, friends, and all people was love in action. As 1st John 3:18 says, "Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth."
He leaves to cherish precious memories: two sons, George Smith, Jr. (Joyce), Wayne Smith (Norma) of Raleigh, North Carolina; one daughter, Debra Keels (Rodney) Gautier, Mississippi; former wife, Doretha Smith; eight grandchildren: Desmen, LaJoy, Michael, Chrystal, Nakeeta, Kenny, Allen, and Vincent. Three great-grandchildren: LaAsia, Desmen, Jr. and Andrea; two sisters, Eunice Brown (John), Greenbackville, Virginia and Sabor Tolliver, Townsend, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
