George Francis Ames

Mar 30, 1940 — Oct 13, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Francis Ames, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who peacefully transitioned from this life at 2:00 a.m. on October 13, 2026 in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was born on March 30, 1940 in Townsend, Virginia.  George was a cornerstone of his community, cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

George was the youngest of six siblings, born to Liston and Olivia Ames.  He was lovingly raised by his beloved sister, Irene Gunter, whom he cherished dearly.  He was affectionately known as "Nookie" and "Boss Man".  He is predeceased by his parents and siblings, Maggie Ames, Irene Ames Gunter, William Ames, Samuel Ames and Jack Ames.  He is also predeceased by his daughter Francine Wescott and son George Tlyree Waters.  In 1958, he married the love of his life, Annie Marie Ames, who predeceased him.  Together, they shared 35 wonderful years.  They enjoyed being together working on home projects, travel getaways, dancing and visiting family.  Together, they created a family filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

He was a devoted father to his children.  He leaves behind a legacy through his surviving children, Regina Darby, Carla Owens (James), Stephanie Ames, Shawn Green (Elise), Telvis Savage, and Nikita Savage, as well as his son-in-law, Theodore Wescott.  George was a proud grandfather to AnnaMarie Ames, Jasmine Davis (Ramon), Deion Wescott, Justus Darby, Sirr Titus Darby (Khrystian), Maya Ames, Angell Ames, Dasia Owens, Jasenia Green, Jhanna Green, and Easton Savage, and a great-grandfather to seven beautiful great-grandchildren AvaMarie Ames, Rylei Davis Callie Davis, Korei Davis, Josiah Wescott, Parker Razor, and Lailani Lee.  His extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Educated in the Northampton County public school system, George was a man of great skill and dedication.  He was a licensed carpenter who, with his own hands, built his family's ranch-style home from the ground up.  He referred to himself as "The Master of Wood", and his craftsmanship adorned the Eastern Shore.  He found joy in assisting his children and elderly neighbors with home improvement projects.  He and his brother, Sam, helped run the family tomato field business.  They were known for famously saying, "Let's Go Get'em" when they set out to work.  A man of many talents, he also worked as a waterman, harvesting and selling oysters and clams.  He briefly worked in construction with the Higgerson and Buchanan Highway Construction Company in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Beyond his professional life, George had many interests.  He was a self-taught bass guitar player, and restored and raced cars.  He delighted in swing dancing with Annie Marie, and taught his daughters how to swing dance.  He frequented the Dover Downs Casino and loved playing cards with friends.  His style was unmistakable, always adorned with a hat, often a Stacy Adams or straw hat.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate George's life on October 24, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at 25283 Charles Lankford, Jr Memorial Hwy, Cape Charles, VA  23310.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations be made to Breast Cancer Association in memory of his daughter Francine Wescott.

The Ames family extends their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at @Heart Homecare and Hospice, Elated Family Care and Golden Heart Home Healthcare and Riverside Cancer Center.  Special thanks are due to Nurse Kristi Lynch, Nurse Sott Law, Stephanie Barco, Maggie Boone, Emma Woods, and Ms. Gayla for their compassionate care.  We extend our heartfelt thanks to Reverend Dre'Langala Swell and Chaplain Phoebe for visiting Dad and sharing prayers with him.

George Francis Ames will be remembered for his patience, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and friends.  His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his spirit will forever dance in the memories of his lived ones.
