Grover McDonald Custis entered eternal rest on Monday, November 21, 2011 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Virginia. He was born on April 11, 1962 in Seaview, Virginia to Mary Elizabeth Custis and the late Burley Andrews. Donald, as he was affectionately known, attended public schools in Mt. Vernon, New York and Northampton County, Virginia. He also enrolled at Flatwoods Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center, Coeburn, Virginia where he became certified in Culinary Arts and Brick Masonry. Donald is predeceased by his father, Burley Andrews, Sr. a brother, Angelo Carey, a sister Lenora Drayton Flagg Cook and his loving maternal grandparents, Deacon Howard and Elizabeth Custis.
Donald accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at First Baptist Church Capeville, Capeville, Virginia where he was baptized and served as a Youth Usher. He later joined Mt. Sinai Gospel Tabernacle Church of Christ Deliverance, Inc., Fairview, Virginia where he faithfully served under Bishop Helen Gillis as an Usher and in the Kitchen/Hospitality Ministry. At his passing, he was an active member of Living Word Church of Deliverance, Parksley, Virginia, serving under Bishop Irvin Jackson as an Usher, a member of the Choir, and in the Kitchen/ Hospitality Ministry. Donald truly loved the Lord and was honored to serve in whatever capacity he could. He will be deeply missed.
After completing the Job Corps, Donald was employed in various capacities on the Eastern Shore of Virginia including the Seafood Industry with his grandfather Howard Custis; Perdue Farms; Bayshore Concrete, Joe Treherne's Remodeling, Kiptopeke Inn and as an Independent Contractor. But Donald's passion was cooking and eating. You could find him barbecuing for family gatherings all over the Eastern Shore. He took great pride in his culinary skills and would brag about what he cooked—greens, pies, ribs, fried fish. He had a giving heart and a loving spirit. He loved his family and would travel wherever to make sure he rarely missed a family gathering or reunion.
