James Russell Ames Sr. entered into eternal rest on January 2015 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Cheapside, Virginia, he was the son of the late Augustus Ames Sr. and Clementine Weeks Ames. He was married to Virginia Washington Ames for 24 years, who predeceased him.
A member of African Baptist Church, James was affectionately nicknamed "Chin Daddy" and "Goose" by those who knew and loved him. We as a family called him "Daddy or "James". He was a dedicated father who provided for the family and always reminded us that we are his responsibility. He worked for many years as a waterman along with his brothers in the Chesapeake bay. he also worked for many years as a janitor.
James was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, sons; James R. Ames Jr. and Charles B. Ames, and brothers and sisters; Gagar Ames, Augustus Ames Jr., Thomas Ames, Sophronia Lindsey and Rachel Trower.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter; Ernestine Ames and Geraldine Washington of Cheriton, VA, sons; Thomas (Maria)Ames Sr. of Portsmouth, VA, and Percell Washington of Norfolk, VA, daughter-in-law Maria Ames and grandson Thomas Ames Jr. of Portsmouth, brothers; Henry Ames and Elmer (Lucky) Ames and a host of other relatives and friends.
