Manie Joynes Goodwyn, affectionally called "Mamie" daughter of the late Joseph and Chanie Satchell Joynes, was born July 4, 1926 in Northampton County, Virginia, where she attended school and remained a lifelong resident. For many years, she was employed at Webster Canning Factory in Cheriton, VA.
Manie was married to the late Samuel Goodwyn, Sr. and they were blessed with seven loving children. She was preceded in death by one son, Wilbur Goodwyn, and by siblings Clarence Joynes, Otha Lister, Evelena Jarvis, Millie Hunt, Blanche Goodwyn, Chanie Valentine, and honorary sister Elizabeth Jarvis. She is survived by six children, Mary Carey (Dean) of Cape Charles, VA; Linda Goodwyn of Virginia Beach, VA; Samuel (Josephine) of Eastville, VA; Clarence (Sarah) of Machipongo, VA; Lawrence (Margaret) of Exmore, VA; Kurt (Clara) of Moseley, VA; daughter-in-law Mary Goodwyn of Chesapeake, VA and son-in-law Juanito Pierre of Trenton, NJ. She has 17 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many relatives.
She was a devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church since the young age of thirteen and served on the Missionary and Stewardess Boards for many years. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23. In May of 2009, Bethel A.M.E. recognized her as Mother of the Year; she was recognized as a humble, quiet, and soft-spoken woman who always had a smile. She loved her church and church family.
Manie is described by her loved-ones as a warm-hearted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She was full of laughs and known for her out-of-the-blue funny sayings such as "New Brooms Sweep Clean, But Old Brooms Carry the Dirt", "Every Shut Eye Ain't Sleep and Every Goodbye Ain't Gone", "A Monkey Loves Money and Has No Pockets", "You Never Miss Your Well Till Your Water Runs Dry" or "Two Heads Are Better Than One, Even If One is a Cabbage Head". Her family had fond memories of her delicious homemade hot rolls and sweet potato biscuits. When she drove, she faithfully visited the sick and often drove friends to their various appointments. During her leisure, Manie enjoyed taking rides, trips and spending time at Hare Valley Senior Center fellowshipping with other seniors. In her final days she would say, I love you, but I love Jesus best."
When a mother shares a lifetime of love, her children have a lifetime of reasons to feel thankful. We cherish you mom. Thanks for loving us the way you did. The Family
