On Tuesday morning, December 11, 2007, Mary "Alice" Wright Smith passed away to a fairer land. She was born in York, South Carolina to the late Isaac and Fannie Crosby Wylie Wright where she spent her childhood. At an early age she realized a need for serving her Savior and joined an AME Church there. Alice attended the First Baptist Church in Cape Charles, Virginia until her health failed.
Alice earned a Bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. There she also met her late husband, William H. Smith. She later earned a Masters of Education degree from Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia. She held memberships with the Silhouettes and Epicureans organizations.
Alice was employed with the Northampton County School System as a counselor for 36 years. Through her counseling services many students were challenged to make better choices in their selection of careers and higher educational institutions.
Mrs. Smith will be remembered for her quiet manner and her expression of confidence. She enjoyed the companionship of her husband, family, and friends.
Alice will be loved and remembered by a devoted niece, Sylvia Alice Bacote, three other nieces, Rose Elaine Mattison and Kathy Wright Davis; three great nieces, Stacey Mattison, Sonja Mattison and Alexis Archer; four nephews, David Cooke, Isaac Wright, Michael Wright and Richard Wright; one great nephew, Lorenzo Archer, and other relatives and dear friends.
