Obituary

Mr. Onray George Savage, 85, of Eastville, VA, transitioned from labor to reward on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at home surrounded by his family.

A Northampton County native, Onray was the youngest of five children born to the late George and Bessie Whitted Savage. A retired welder from Bayshore Concrete Company, he served in the Korean War as a sergeant-first-class and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Bronze Star for heroism. He was well-known throughout the community, especially for his spirit of cooperation. Gifted with his hands, Onray was a "jack-of-all-trades" able to design and build structures and fix complex mechanical problems. He was a long-time member and trustee at Union Baptist Church in Eastville.

Onray is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth; daughter Perdita Spriggs (husband Richard) of Cary, NC; son Vaughan Harris (wife Doris) of Cherrystone, VA; sister Madge Christian of Exmore, VA; sister Iris Kay (husband Martin) of Menlo Park, CA; grandson Palance E. Harris (wife Tina) of Frisco, TX; and granddaughters Brantley Belk and Tyler Spriggs of Cary, and Tonya Cherie Harris of Pikesville, MD. His memory will be cherished by a host of other nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, family, and friends.

Onray's homegoing service will be Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Eastville, with the Rev. George Bright officiating. A wake will be held Friday, April 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gray's Funeral Home's Birdsnest location (Holy Unity Commandment Church of God).

Arrangements are being made by Gray's Funeral Home in Cape Charles.
