Obituary

It was a joyous occasion in the household of the late McKinley and the Late Thelma Merritt Downes on July 12, 1954, upon the arrival of Thelma Malinda Downes Harmon.  It was God's will that her works here be finished and He called her home to be with Him on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at her home in Belle Haven, Virginia.

Thelma or "Twiggy" as she was affectionately known by many who knew and loved her attended and graduated from Northampton County Virginia Public School System.

She was a hard worker during her productive years as a seamstress at the former Gregg Harriett Shirt Factory, laborer at Shore Memorial Hospital and an attendant at Gray's Funeral Home.

She was the proud parent of one son, Charles Harmon, Jr and one daughter Nicole Jefferson.

Early in life she accepted Christ in her life and continued daily working out her soul salvation.  She was a former member of the New Mount Zion Baptist Church and at her  demise was a member of the Glorious Church of God located in Onancock, Virginia.

Thelma loved singing and sharing her voice with everyone that she met.  She was the founder of the CNT Faith Gospel Singers who traveled throughout the Eastern  Shore, Maryland and Delaware uplifting God thru song. She loved attending various churches in the area and was always assisting them with various projects within their household of faith.  Often she would cook meals or various types of pastries, sell them and donate the proceeds to a church that needed assistance with a project.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Rising Star Chapter #14, Order of Celestial Court, Rehab Court #2, Hanna Counsel #1, and Daughters of The Sphinx.

Preceding her in death are her parents McKinley and Thelma Downes, two brothers, Edward and Jeffery Downes; three sisters: Alice, Melody and Obelia Downes.

Rejoicing in her triumphant victory are her daughters Nicole Crystal Jefferson, son, Charles Edward Harmon, Jr, grandchildren Deshawn Jefferson and Charles Edward Harmon, III, sisters, Kendall Chandler, Joy Parker, Deborah Wilkinson and Minnie Milliner, six nephews, seven nieces, numerous cousins, other relatives and friends and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Communities.
