Obituary

Mrs. Thelma Satchell Savage, a Resident of Cape Charles, Virginia was born May 26, 1927 to the Late Elmer and Maude Satchell in Northampton County, Virginia.  After a very short and sudden illness, she passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Tidal Health Peninsula Medical in Salisbury, Maryland at the age of 96 with her loving and adoring husband Andre "Buddy" Savage, and daughter Monica Floyd by her bedside until her last breath.

At a very young age, she joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, Eastville, Virginia.  She loved to sing and was a dedicated and faithful Gospel Choir member for 59 years, a Stewardess, Missionary, and dedicated Sunday School Student.  She put God first in every area of her life.

She worked at Webster's Factory and Cane and Miller.  Thelma also became an entrepreneur at a young age and was a self-taught upholsterer and seamstress.  She and her siblings were bored one day and decided to tear apart the furniture and reupholster it.  They perfected their craft and as word spread, many traveled from far and near to have their house furniture, car and boat seats reupholstered.  She also designed and made wedding dresses, dresses, pants, shirts, curtains, chair covers, fancy hats and choir robes.  She was an avid crocheter and enjoyed teaching her great-granddaughter, Ashanti Morris how to crochet.  Ashanti later presented her great-grandmother with a beautiful grey and white crocheted blanket.  Thelma also enjoyed babysitting several of the Eastville neighborhood children, who once grown brought their children to visit.

Thelma's beautiful smile would light up a room, and her soft speech could bring calm to any situation.  Her hugs and kisses always made you feel like no matter what was going on, everything was going to be okay.  She saw the best in the worst of situations.

She encountered and wedded the affectionate Cleveland Morris. Through this partnership, they nurtured two children, Annette and Monica.  Regrettably, years down the road, she experienced the loss of her spouse, leaving her feeling hurt and sorrowful.  Nonetheless, despite the challenges she faced, she gathered her strength and persevered, ensuring outstanding support and provision for her children.

However, it was not God's plan for her to remain single forever.  At the age of 75, while attending Sunday morning service at Bethel A.M.E, she caught the attention of Mr. Andre "Buddy" Savage.  After three years of courtship, they decided to get married when she was 78 years old.  Their wedding was a joyous occasion, with a bridal party of 33 celebrating their love.  It was a day filled with happiness and her beautiful smile was seen by everyone as her baby brother gracefully walked her down the aisle and her older sister, Fannie gave her away.

Their love story continued for the next 19 years.  They enjoyed evening drives, trips to different places and daily ice cream dates.  Their marriage was cherished and admired by those around them.  Buddy treated her like a queen, always making her smile and ensuring she wanted for nothing.  Their marriage vows were taken seriously, promising to be there for each other, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part; and true to his work, her Buddy remained by her side, holding her hand until the very end.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Altena Turner, Fannie Berry-Lincoln Satchell, Christina Satchell Claude; brothers Lorenzo Satchell, John Henry Satchell, Joseph Satchell and granddaughter Faatima Vann.  God plucked a beautiful jewel to add to His heavenly garden.  She leaves to cherish her loving memories, here devoted husband, Andre Savage of Cape Charles, VA, her two children, Annette Vann of Cape Charles, VA and Dr. Monica (Tobias) Floyd of Salisbury, MD, Loving Sister-in-Law, Joanne Spady of Eastville, VA, Her devoted nieces, Valarie (Clarence) Baines of Fayetteville, NC and Helena (Earl) Powell of Chesapeake, VA, devoted nephews, Jeffrey (Yvonne) Turner and Vann Claude of Woodstock (Chenisa), MD and Gregory Smith of Eastville, VA, watchful grand-daughter Roneqah Jones of Richmond, VA, loving caregiver, Patricia Holcombe of Cape Charles, VA, cousins/personal chefs, Eula Mae Weeks and Caleb Collins, Jr of Machipongo, VA and Vanessa and Chicnika Weatherly of VA, 4 grandsons, Khalifath, Hanifth and Carl Vann and Shelton Dudley, 5 grand-daughters, Jamilya and Ahyisha Vann and Anna "Angel" Beach of VA,  Roneqah Jones of VA, Catalina Floyd of MD and a host of great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and the entire community of the Eastern Shore of Virginia
